Description: The estimation of the size of deer populations aids in assessing the impacts that deer are having on District lands, and helps to determine whether there is a relationship between observed impacts (e.g., damage to plant communities, number of DVAs) and deer numbers. Aerial surveys and pellet-based distance sampling are both effective methods and may be used for estimating deer numbers on District lands. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages that should be considered (Table 1). Periodically, both methods should be used in conjunction with each other on the same sites to ensure that deer population estimates derived from both methods are consistent.
